The Green Gift Guide

By Kim Erickson

’Tis the season for making a list and checking it twice. For this year’s gift giving, forget the long lines at the mall and the same old slippers, candles, and wallets. Instead, do something nice for people on your list—and Mother Earth—with environmentally friendly gifts.

Chic and Stylish
What to get the environmentally conscious fashionista? Check your health food store for casual organic clothing by Maggie’s. You can also find a wealth of sustainable clothing at Web sites like rawganique.com, beklina.com, and bluecanoe.com. Looking for high-style, low-impact accessories? Try HER Design (her-design.com) for handbags made from PVC-free vegan “leather,” organic cotton, or hemp canvas.

Recycled Bling
Support the move away from dirty gold-mining techniques and conflict diamonds with jewelry made from recycled material. GreenKarat (greenkarat.com) creates ecologically and socially responsible jewelry using recycled diamonds, semiprecious gemstones, gold, and silver.

Bath and Body Essentials
Treat someone you love to nontoxic beauty products. You can fi nd readymade kits like Burt’s Bees’ Foot Care Kit or Dr. Hauschka’s lavender-scented Take Five Kit in larger health food stores. Or create a custom spa basket fi lled with organic shower gel, body scrub, and moisturizing lotion for a perfectly pampering present.

Guy Gear
Tired of giving the same old ties and aftershave to the men on your list? How about giving an amateur athlete a fairtrade basketball, football, or soccer ball available from Fair Trade Sports (fairtradesports.com)? Men addicted to gadgets will love a universal solar charger (ecogeekliving.com) that charges most electronic devices, including iPods and cell phones, in less than three hours.

Green Eats
This year, cruise your health food store for some yummy organic breads, cookies, and chocolates. Coffee lovers will appreciate a basket containing two or three fair-trade, organic blends. For a really luxe gift, give a bottle of Manatee Merlot (manateemerlot.com) to help protect the remaining 3,000 manatees through Save the Manatee, and pair it with a jar of environmentally sustainable caviar from nonendangered sturgeon (caviaremptor.org).

Child’s Play
Between lead paint and PVC, toy buying can be treacherous. Opt for cuddly stuffed animals made from organic cotton or a soft Hugg-A-Planet (peacetoys.com). The nonviolent toys, cooperative games, and nontoxic craft kits at online toy stores like Rosie Hippo’s Toys (rosiehippo.com) or Peapods (peapods.com) will also be a hit with children of all ages. Made with materials like sustainable wood, organic cotton, and nontoxic paint, these sturdy toys will last for years.

Share the Love (of the Planet, of Course) Consider a donation in your gift recipient’s name. Let your gift list fight global warming with contributions to the Climate Crisis Coalition (climatecrisiscoalition.org), an alliance of environmentalists, human rights activists, and religious leaders working toward renewable clean energy solutions to global warming. Another worthy environmental organization is Earthjustice (earthjustice.org). Made up of attorneys who work pro bono to protect the Earth and its inhabitants from toxins, Earthjustice fights special interest groups and lax governmental agencies on behalf of hundreds of community and environmental groups. You can also support social justice with a donation to needy communities around the world.
