The genus Lactobacillus contains more than 125 species, and is commonly found in yogurt, cider, wine, sauerkraut, cheese, chocolate, and other fermented foods.

Oral and gastrointestinal colonization of Lactobacillus is established during early childhood, and it plays an important role in human health.

One of the beneficial Lactobacillus species, Lactobaccilus plantarum 299v (Lp299v), has been shown to have exceptional abilities including: a) mucosal binding and colonization; b) tolerance to a variety of stresses; c) prevention of inflammatory changes in disease models; d) regulation of bacterial overgrowth; and e) enhancement of vaccine efficacy.

  • Reduced Growth and Penetration of Germs: Lp299v has been shown to have exceptional adherence and colonization characteristics on gut mucosa, even in the presence of commonly used antibiotics. This ability prevents the adhesion and translocation of pathogens that are often associated with occasional diarrhea and bowel discomfort. Lp299v is known to stimulate the secretion of mucus as well as inhibitory molecules. Stable colonization of Lp299v may also slow down pathogen expansion by competing for nutrients. This general inhibition of pathogen growth (i.e., viruses and bacteria) leads to a reduction in infections and inflammation.
  • Healthy Digestion and Nutritional Support: Lp299v metabolizes sugars and fibers into vital nutrients, such as short-chain fatty acids, polyamines, vitamins, antioxidants, and amino acids. The primary nutrients for the colon, they are essential for general gastrointestinal health and function.
  • Immune Health: Healthy colonization of Lp299v alters cytokine, immune cell, and metabolic profiles in the intestine, which positively affects immune function. Some studies have indicated that positive effects on immune function may also promote enhanced memory and learning behavior.

Effect of Lp299v Clinical Research:

Multiple randomized, controlled, and double-blind studies with Lp299v supplementation have shown significant improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms including IBS. For example, Neidzelin K et al. have reported complete disappearance of abdominal pain in a treatment group after the 4 weeks of Lp299v (20 billion cfu/day) supplementation. Resolution of irregularity, and other IBS associated symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and bloating in one study were also documented, and the difference was significant when compared to the placebo group.

Safety: Lp299v has been widely commercialized and consumed by many nations for decades without any reported complications. The natural occurrence of this beneficial bacteria in food and human mucosa, and the human origin of the commercial probiotic Lp299v may explain its well-accepted tolerance in people.
