Be prepared for cold and flu season with homeopathic single remedies-one of the safest and most effective ways to stop colds and flu in their tracts

Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, author of Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments, suggests the following remedies for seasonal ailments. Select the one that best matches your child’s symptoms and use a “6,” “12,” or “30” potency every hour to start, says Dean. Reduce the dosage to three times daily as symptoms subside. If symptoms don’t improve in two days, try a different remedy.

Aconite

Use aconite at the first signs of an illness, especially when brought on by exposure to cold weather. Aconite is also indicated for asthma, dry suffocating cough, sore throat, and a high temperature.

Belladonna

Belladonna is often the remedy of choice for children with high fevers, severe pain, throbbing, burning, earaches, or flushing. Additionally, belladonna is recommended for swollen glands and joints, chicken pox, air sickness, laryngitis, and toothache.

Hepar Sulph

This remedy is indicated if cold or flu symptoms accompany hypersensitivity and/or irritability. Hepar Sulph may be helpful for croupy cough with rattling in the chest but little mucus, as well as earache, tonsillitis, and sinusitis.

Pulsatilla

Pulsatilla may be used for any mucusy condition with yellow-green, thick discharge; hay fever; styes on the eyelids; mumps with swollen glands; measles; or sinusitis with yellow discharge. It can also help digestive disturbances with abdominal bloating after eating, and is often indicated if there is an absence of thirst and rapid change in symptoms.
