Live Green, Live Longer
A green environment with lots of plants, shrubs, and trees extends women’s lives, according to a Harvard study of more than 108,000 female nurses. Researchers mapped their home locations and used satellite imagery to see density of vegetation within ¾ of a mile around homes, and correlated the data with health and deaths during an 8-year period. More greenery equated with better mental health, more social activities, more physical activity, less air pollution, and significantly fewer deaths from kidney disease, respiratory conditions, and cancer. For urban dwellers, it’s a good idea to take advantage of local parks and hiking trails.
