People who lose weight on a low-calorie diet can preserve more lean muscle by consuming whey protein, rather than the equivalent amount of soy protein or carbohydrate, according to a study by Canadian and British researchers. Published in The Journal of Nutrition, the study tested the two proteins during a 14-day weight-loss diet, among 40 overweight men and women between the ages of 35 and 65. Preserving lean muscle makes it easier to maintain a new, lower weight.
