The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend omega-3 fats to maintain good health, but a recent study concluded that over 95 percent of American children and 68 percent of adults don’t get enough. The study looked specifically at levels of EPA and DHA, which are found in fish, fish oil, and vegan supplements made from plant sources of EPA and DHA such as algae.
A previous research review found that omega-3 fatty acids significantly improve development of brain and motor skills in babies and children. The authors concluded that it’s especially important for pregnant women and young children to get enough of these nutrients.
If you don’t routinely eat fish, omega-3 supplements are available as capsules, liquid fish oil, smoothie-style products, and chewable gummies formulated for all ages. For children, flavored liquid supplements or gummies can be easier (and tastier) to take than capsules.
