People who drink any type of coffee—decaf, caffeinated, ground, or instant—are less likely to develop liver disease, according to a study of more than 494,000 people in the United Kingdom. And among those who already have liver disease, coffee can help to slow down its progression. While the liver-protective benefit of coffee was previously known, this new study confirmed that all types of coffee confer the same effect.
Previous research has shown other coffee benefits, including lower risk of heart failure. And a 30-year study of more than 200,000 doctors and nurses, published in the American Heart Association Journal Circulation showed that people who drink moderate amounts of coffee—no more than 5 cups per day—are less likely to die from type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or neurological diseases compared to people who don’t indulge in the brew. We can’t think of a better reason to go visit your barista.
