French researchers have found that pea protein is at least as effective as whey, considered the gold standard, for enhancing muscle gains from strength training. In the study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, researchers gave 161 young men 25 grams of either whey or pea protein, or a placebo, twice daily. Measuring increase in thickness of bicep muscles, they found that protein-related increases were greatest among the weakest men, and compared to whey, gains were slightly greater with pea protein.
