A study of more than 3,200 middle- aged married couples found that women play a leading role in influencing men’s fitness habits. Johns Hopkins researchers met twice with each couple, roughly six years apart. When the women met the recommended levels of physical activity at the outset, their spouses were 70 percent more likely to do the same by the second visit; but when the tables were turned, women were only 40 percent more likely to meet the recom-mendations (at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week or 75 minutes of intense activity).
