Much of the allure of the rose lies in its delicate scent, and many organic beauty products rely on the flower in lieu of artificial fragrances. But the rose’s beauty benefits are much more significant.

Damask rose (known for its rich, potent scent) and cabbage rose (characterized by a light, sweet scent) are the most common species used in beauty products. Both are valued for their oils, which are extracted from the flower. Rose essential oil is expensive-it takes tens of thousands of rose blossoms to yield one ounce of pure oil.
But rose essential oil is one luxury item worth its steep price tag: The oil, which is rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, is an excellent moisturizer for dry skin. Many aestheticians believe it’s ideal for mature skin. Rose essential oil also contains anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and astringent qualities. This makes it helpful for treating certain skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.
Rosehip oil is another popular beauty ingredient. Extracted from the seeds of the wild rose bush, rosehip oil is packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These beneficial fats can help repair and regenerate skin cells, improving the appearance of scars, burns, blemishes, and age spots. Rosehip oil also contains beta-carotene and tretinoin, a retinoic acid that helps diminish lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.
Rose water is made by steaming small batches of rose buds to release a volatile therapeutic compound. The essential oil is drawn off, and micro molecules of essential oil and constituents from the flower are captured. Rosewater has antibacterial properties and helps balance skin. As a natural astringent, rosewater helps tighten pores without causing dryness. This sweet-smelling water naturally conditions hair and helps promote hair growth.
