Many commercial deodorants are replete with chemical additives. The good news is there are natural alternatives that really work

Is protecting your pits increasing your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer? The debate continues. But one thing’s for sure: for a product that’s supposed to keep you clean and fresh, deodorants and antiperspirants are loaded with some pretty nasty ingredients.

ALUMINUM:
While no epidemiological research has confirmed a link between Alzheimer’s and antiperspirants, a couple of studies have found an association between use of antiperspirants, accumulation of aluminum in the brain and increased risk of Alzheimer’s. And a recent study suggests that aluminum has estrogen-mimicking effects and could increase the risk of breast cancer.

PARABENS:
Used as preservatives in deodorants, antiperspirants and other personal care products, parabens have estrogenic activity and have been found in breast cancer tissue. Other recent reviews have also suggested that parabens may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Additionally, antiperspirants and deodorants contain triclosan, an antibacterial agent that may contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Other potentially toxic ingredients include propylene glycol, alcohol, PEG (polyethylene glycol), and synthetic fragrances that can irritate skin. Why risk it, when there are great alternatives that can keep you dry and fresh all day?

Natural stick, spray, roll-on, and crystal salt antiperspirants use mineral salts or potassium alum, astringents to stem perspiration and control odor. Natural deodorants work by controlling bacterial growth with antibacterial herbs like tea tree oil, rosemary, lichen, sage or lemongrass, then masking any remaining odor with pure essential oils. Most also contain baking soda and cornstarch to absorb moisture. And natural antiperspirants and deodorants may contain healing ingredients like calendula, chamomile, and arnica to calm and soothe the sensitive underarm area and prevent irritation.
