A study of overweight and obese people, at the University of Colorado, Boulder, found that taking 500 mg daily of time-released vitamin C produces some of the same benefits as walking daily for exercise. Both reduce levels of a protein (called endothelin) that constricts blood vessels, thereby elevating risk for heart disease. The research was presented at the 14th International Conference on Endothelin: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics, in Savannah, Ga.
