Research at Georgia Regents University in Augusta has discovered how vitamin E helps to build muscle, supporting a belief long held by bodybuilders. Weight lifting and resistance exercise works through a two-step process: Muscles are somewhat damaged during the exercise and then, as they repair themselves, they get a little bigger and stronger. The new research, published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine, found that vitamin E enhances the repair step, because it is essential for membranes of muscle cells to recover from the damage that occurs when muscles are challenged.
