How Phytochemicals Promote Weight Loss

Many Americans make losing weight their No. 1 New Year's resolution, but they often find it hard to succeed. As a clinical nutritionist, I can tell you that this is an attainable goal if you address the biochemical imbalances that affect body fat.

Green tea, for example, contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol that increases the production of the weight-loss hormone noradrenaline. This hormone increases fat burning and metabolism. You can boost this endocrine-supportive compound in your diet by adding green tea or green-tea ice cubes to smoothies.

Another favorite, nutrient-rich ingredient is frozen wild blueberries, which provide twice the antioxidants of common blueberries. Studies have found that people who eat wild blueberries daily tend to gain less weight and have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Wild blueberries have also been shown to improve symptoms associated with insulin resistance.

Your body is in a constant state of cell turnover, hormone production, and fat development. Eating foods rich in phytochemicals-frequently-helps to support your body in this continual process of fat loss.
