Over-the-counter antacids that contain aspirin, such as Alka-Seltzer, Bromo Seltzer, and others, can cause serious bleeding. Although labels make note of this danger, recent cases of serious bleeding have prompted the FDA to issue a warning, pointing out that consumers always need to read and heed warnings on drug labels. Safe, natural alternatives for indigestion and heartburn include deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), taken 15-30 minutes before meals; apple cider vinegar mixed in water, taken before meals or when discomfort occurs; digestive enzymes taken with meals; and a daily probiotic supplement.
