Fish Oil Benefits:

Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for heart health

A large research review of studies from around the world has provided the best evidence yet for the beneficial role that omega-3 fatty acids play in heart health. Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the review was an international effort, sponsored by the NIH and other countries’ health agencies. It analyzed 19 previous studies that examined blood or tissue levels of omega-3 fats in a total of 45,637 people in 16 different countries. The upshot: People with the highest blood levels of omega-3s, from fish or plant sources, had about a 25 percent lower risk of fatal heart attack as compared to people with the lowest levels. “Our results lend support to the importance of fish and omega-3 consumption as part of a healthy diet,” says study coauthor Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston.
