In a study of 100 teenage girls who replaced conventional cosmetics, shampoos, and soaps with nontoxic versions, levels of known toxins dropped substantially in three days: parabens by 44 percent, triclosan by 35 percent, and phthalates by 27 percent. The researchers, from the Environmental Health Laboratory of the California Department of Public Health, used urine tests to measure levels of toxins in the girls’ bodies.
