Zinc lozenges, which dissolve in the mouth, speed up recovery from colds, according to a review of earlier studies that was published in the journal BMC Family Practice. In the studies, zinc shortened the duration of muscle aches by 54 percent, nasal discharge by 34 percent, nasal congestion by 37 percent, sneezing by 22 percent, scratchy throat by 33 percent, sore throat by 18 percent, hoarseness by 43 percent, and cough by 46 percent. The researchers recommend taking zinc acetate lozenges, 80 mg per day, for not more than two weeks.
